“Therapeutic Lying”:  Calming Your Loved One Through Conversation

Speaker:  Rose Colley, LCSW, Private Practice Social Worker, holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from LSU & a Certificate of Specialization in Gerontology with 45 years of experience as a social worker, 30 of which were exclusively in working with the elderly.  She began with a 5 year stint in a geriatric-psychiatric facility & currently 25 years in private practice.  Rose has worked with seniors & caregivers in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, private homes, and in her office.  She is truly grateful to all the seniors & caregivers who have taught her so much, more than she ever could have learned earning her degree.

One of the key elements in providing care for individuals diagnosed with dementia is to maintain a calm environment.  Appropriate communication skills go a long way in achieving this goal.  Of Great importance is knowing what to say; how to say it; and perhaps most importantly, how not to say too much!  Lets explore the need to know and the need to not know everything there is to know!
